Ask for an hour estimate for your move
Send your home size, both addresses and the date. We reply with the truck, the crew and an hour estimate, so the total is worked out from your move rather than an average.
Example totals by truck and hours, with HST
These rows show the arithmetic only. The hours are examples picked to show the maths, not a prediction of how long your move will take.
| Truck | Example hours | Before HST | HST (13%) | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small cargo van, $100/hr | 2 | $200 | $26 | $226 |
| Small cargo van, $100/hr | 3 | $300 | $39 | $339 |
| Medium truck, $120/hr | 4 | $480 | $62 | $542 |
| Medium truck, $120/hr | 5.5 | $660 | $86 | $746 |
| Large truck, $130/hr | 6 | $780 | $101 | $881 |
| Large truck, $130/hr | 8 | $1,040 | $135 | $1,175 |
HST and totals are rounded to the nearest dollar. Packing materials, including stretch wrap, are added separately. The minimum booking time is confirmed when you reserve.
What changes the cost of a move
The rate is fixed, so cost is really a question of hours. These are the things that add or remove them.
Stairs and walk distance
A third-floor walk-up or a long path from the front door to the street adds trips and time per item. Ground-floor homes with a driveway are the quickest to load.
Elevator bookings
In a condo, a reserved service elevator keeps the crew moving. Sharing a passenger elevator with residents can double the time it takes to empty a unit.
Distance between homes
Driving time is part of the hours. Inside the GTA the drive is usually a small slice of the day; a move across the region adds more road time to the bill.
How ready the boxes are
Taped, labelled and stacked boxes go on the truck fast. Half-packed rooms mean the crew waits or packs, and both are billed time.
Packing materials
Boxes, tape and stretch wrap are charged on top of the hourly rate. Using your own boxes reduces that line, though furniture still gets wrapped.
Disassembly, which is included
Taking beds and tables apart takes time, but there is no separate assembly charge with us. It is already in the rate, so you do not need to do it yourself to save money.
How to cut the hours on move day
On the large truck, one hour saved is $147 off the bill with tax.
Be completely packed
Everything boxed and sealed before the crew arrives, with the boxes grouped near the exit instead of spread through the house.
Reserve the elevator at both ends
Book the service elevator for the whole window at the old and the new building, and ask if it needs padding.
Save a spot for the truck
Keep the driveway clear or reserve space on the street so the truck parks at the door rather than down the block.
Leave the furniture assembled
Disassembly is part of our rate, so pulling apart the bed yourself saves nothing and often costs time when parts go missing.
Clear out first
Anything you are throwing away is cheaper to remove before the move than to load, drive and unload.
Comparing cheap movers by total cost instead of hourly rate
A low advertised rate is not the same as a low bill. Two companies can quote the same hourly number and finish with very different totals once fuel surcharges, truck fees, assembly charges and travel time to your door are added. A company whose rate already includes those things can end up costing less even if its headline rate is higher.
The fairest comparison is to ask every mover for the same thing: an estimated total for your move, with HST, written down. Then compare those totals. If a quote only gives a rate, ask what is excluded before you compare it with anyone else.
Timing matters too. Moving mid-week or mid-month is often easier to book than the last Saturday of the month, when demand is highest. Our guide to the cheapest day to move in Ontario goes into that in detail.
Hidden-fee questions to ask any mover
Ask these of every company you get a quote from, including us.
Is fuel or mileage charged separately?
With us it is included. Elsewhere it can be a flat truck fee or a per-kilometre charge.
Is there a charge for travel time to my home?
Ask when the clock starts: at the depot, or when the crew arrives at your door.
Do you charge to take apart and rebuild furniture?
Ours is included. Some movers bill it per piece.
What is the minimum booking?
Most movers have one. Ask for it in writing so a short move is not billed for hours that were never worked.
How are packing materials priced?
Ask whether stretch wrap and blankets are included or added per roll or per item.
Is HST included in the number you gave me?
A quote without tax looks 13% smaller than the bill you will actually pay.
Cleaning and set-up as part of the moving budget
The real cost of moving includes the move-out clean for your landlord or buyer and getting the new place usable. Booking the move, the clean and the TV mounting or assembly together keeps it to one quote and one team.
Your questions, answered
Before you book
How much do movers cost per hour in the GTA?
Our rates are $100 an hour with a small cargo van, $120 an hour with a medium truck and $130 an hour with a large truck, each with two movers. HST of 13% is added on top.
What does a 3-hour move cost with the small van?
Three hours at $100 is $300 before tax. HST adds $39, for a total of $339, plus any packing materials you use.
How much is a move with the large truck for 6 hours?
Six hours at $130 is $780. HST adds $101, for a total of $881 rounded to the dollar, plus packing materials.
Is there a minimum number of hours?
The minimum booking time is confirmed when you reserve. Ask for it when you request a quote so you can include it in your budget.
Are fuel and furniture assembly extra?
No. Fuel, mileage, furniture assembly and disassembly, and insurance are included in every hourly package. Packing materials and HST are the extras.
How can I estimate how many hours my move will take?
Send us your home size, a list of large items, the stairs or elevator situation at both ends and both addresses. We give you an hour estimate for your move instead of a generic average.
Should I tip my movers?
Tipping is up to you and is not part of our price. Our guide on how much to tip movers in Ontario covers what people commonly do.
