Tips & advice

How much should you tip movers in Ontario?

If you want to thank the crew with a tip, choose an amount that fits your budget. This guide explains two ways to calculate it. The examples are choices you can make, not an industry rule or a required Optimum charge.

Is tipping movers expected in Canada?

A tip is separate from the price agreed for the move. If a quote contains a service charge or gratuity, ask what it covers rather than assuming it is a voluntary extra. Discuss unclear charges with the company before booking. The final bill should describe the agreed moving work and extras; a personal thank-you should not replace an explanation of the charges.

This page offers calculation options, not a survey of what Canadians usually pay. There is no client-supplied tipping percentage or crew payment policy to publish here. Choose an amount that works for you, or choose not to tip. A clear thank-you and honest feedback about the job are other ways to acknowledge helpful work. Do not feel you must spend money reserved for essentials at the new home.

Ways to say thank you

If you choose a financial thank-you, a percentage and a fixed amount are two options. Neither is a mandatory rate.

OptionYour decisionWhat to clarify
A chosen percentageSelect a percentage that fits your budgetWhich part of the bill you are using for the calculation
An amount per moverChoose a sum for each personHow you would like a shared amount divided
Drinks or foodOffer something if appropriateAsk first about preferences; there is no obligation
Written feedbackDescribe your actual experienceKeep the review honest and separate from any payment

The percentage examples below illustrate arithmetic, not an expected gratuity.

Working it out with an hourly rate

For a calculation example, suppose you choose a 10% tip on the pre-tax package cost for four billable hours at $120 per hour. Ten per cent of four hours is 24 minutes of that rate; choosing 15% would equal 36 minutes. You decide whether either percentage is appropriate. This is not a claim that the package is all labour: it includes a vehicle and other listed items. If you want to use only the labour part as your basis, ask for that figure rather than estimating it yourself.

If you prefer a fixed amount, decide how much you want to give each mover. It does not have to be calculated by hour or doubled for a longer day. You can adjust it to your budget and experience. Keep the quote payment and any optional gratuity clear, and ask how a shared amount will be distributed if you do not give it to each person separately.

Work you may want to acknowledge

  • Stairs and walk-ups

You may particularly appreciate careful handling on staircases or through a difficult entrance. Extra effort can inform your personal decision without creating a required tip.

  • Heavy or awkward pieces

Safes, treadmills, solid wood dressers and large appliances take care and strength, and those trips are the hardest part of the day.

  • Bad weather

Moving in snow, ice or a heat wave is harder on the body, and protecting floors takes extra effort.

  • Extra care with fragile things

Art, mirrors and family pieces that arrive without a mark, wrapped properly and placed where you asked.

  • Going beyond the job

Clear communication and care with the agreed tasks may deserve a thank-you. Furniture assembly included in the package remains included; a tip is not required to receive it.

When it's fine not to tip

If the crew was late without warning, careless with your things, or rude, you don't owe a tip. Speak to the company about the problem instead; a tip is not the place to settle a complaint, and the company can only fix what it hears about.

It's also fine not to tip when money is tight, since a move already costs a fair amount. A cold drink, a thank you and a review that names the crew all count for something.

How to give a tip

  1. 1

    Decide before move day

Pick a percentage or a flat amount ahead of time so you are not doing maths at the end of a long day.

  2. 2

    Have cash or e-transfer ready

Small bills in envelopes, one per mover, are easy. E-transfer works if each mover is happy to share their details.

  3. 3

    Give it at the end

Wait until the last item is in and the furniture is assembled, then hand it to each mover directly.

  4. 4

    Leave a review

Name the movers if you can. Reviews help a small crew more than most people realise.

Your questions, answered

A few more things to know

Do you have to tip movers in Ontario?

No. Tipping is optional. Your bill pays for the move; a tip is a personal thank you if you were happy with the work.

Should I tip each mover or give one amount to the crew?

Giving each mover their own share is the clearest way. If you give one amount, tell the crew it is for everyone so it is split evenly.

Is a percentage or a flat amount better?

Either is fine. Percentages scale with long moves; flat amounts per mover are simpler for short moves or labour-only help.

Should I tip on the tax and materials?

That is your choice. If using a percentage, decide which part of the bill it applies to and avoid counting a gratuity twice. Ask for clarification if the quote separates labour, materials and other charges.

Is buying lunch enough instead of a cash tip?

It is a kind gesture and many crews appreciate it. Whether you also tip is up to you.

Do your movers expect a tip?

A tip is optional and is separate from the agreed quote. Ask the team about any line you do not understand before booking. This guide does not impose a gratuity or publish an unconfirmed crew compensation policy.

Do people tip cleaners or installers after a move?

Sometimes, on the same basis: optional, and for work you were happy with. A review that mentions the service helps just as much.
