Moving and cleaning: which should happen first?

For an empty-home clean, remove belongings first and clean before the next delivery. Build your timetable around actual access and handover times.

At a glance

Your quick checklist

  • Separate timelines for old and new homes
  • A buffer between loading and cleaning
  • Appliance and cupboard scope confirmed
  • Access and key handover assigned
01

Separate the two homes

Your old home and new home may need different schedules. At the old address, packing and loading usually come before the final empty-home clean. At the new address, cleaning is easier before furniture and boxes fill the rooms. Write both sequences down separately.

02

Allow for the parts that can slip

Do not plan the cleaner’s arrival for the exact minute the moving truck is expected to leave. Elevators, keys and loading can take longer than hoped. Share the fixed handover time with both teams and ask whether your proposed window is realistic.

03

Confirm what empty actually means

Tell the cleaning team if furniture, rubbish or packed boxes will still be there. Agree whether appliance interiors, cupboards, baseboards and other detailed work are included. Removing unwanted items and cleaning surfaces are separate jobs, so arrange removal in advance if needed.

04

Plan the final walkthrough

Keep access, water and electricity available for the agreed work. Decide who checks the finished rooms and returns the keys. Photos and a clear task list help you discuss any missed area. Cleaning can prepare the property for handover, but it does not guarantee a landlord’s or buyer’s acceptance.
