Before the cleaner arrives: five useful preparations
You do not need to clean before a cleaning visit. Clear access, explain priorities and make the important details easy to find.

At a glance
Your quick checklist
- Clutter moved from target surfaces
- Entry and pet arrangements shared
- Special surfaces and product needs flagged
- A short priority list ready
Clear surfaces the team needs to reach
Move loose clothing, paperwork and everyday clutter off the areas you want cleaned. This is about access, not making the home look perfect. If tidying or organising is part of the help you need, ask whether it can be included rather than assuming it comes with the clean.
Explain the household routine
Share entry instructions and identify any rooms that should remain closed. Mention pets and arrange a comfortable space for them away from the work. Tell the team if someone will be working from home or needs a quiet room at a particular time.
Point out surfaces needing special care
Flag delicate finishes and pass along the manufacturer’s care instructions where available. Discuss any product preferences or sensitivities before the visit. Health Canada advises following product labels and never mixing cleaning products; leave product choices and safe use clear rather than improvising mixtures.
Make priorities easy to review
Leave a short list in order of importance and agree how to contact you if a question comes up. Put away valuables and private paperwork. Before the team leaves, review the agreed areas together when possible, so any practical concern can be addressed while everyone understands the original request.
