Blinds or curtains: measure the plan before you order.
Inside-mount blinds, outside-mount blinds and curtain rods need different measurements. Decide on the installation style before buying.

At a glance
Your quick checklist
- Mounting style selected
- Each window labelled and measured
- Product-specific measuring guide checked
- Hardware, clearance and power needs confirmed
Choose the look and mounting style
An inside mount sits within the window recess; an outside mount sits beyond it. Curtains introduce another decision about rod position and drop. Check the chosen product’s measuring guide before recording dimensions, because ordering rules differ between manufacturers.
Record each opening separately
Give every window a simple label and take photos with the measurements. Do not assume neighbouring windows are identical. Note handles, trim, vents and nearby furniture that could interfere with opening the window or operating the covering.
Confirm who supplies the hardware
Explain whether brackets, rods and fittings are already purchased. Ask the installer what information is needed to assess the mounting surface. If you want measurements checked before ordering a custom product, request that explicitly; an installation appointment may happen too late to change the order.
Check the whole movement
Think about how far curtains should open and whether a blind can be raised without obstruction. For motorised products, confirm power and control requirements before purchasing. Once installed, review operation and care instructions and keep the product information for future adjustment or replacement.
