Your first-night box: the last thing to pack
A clearly marked essentials bag helps you settle in without searching every box. Pack for the first evening, not for every possibility.

At a glance
Your quick checklist
- Keys, documents and chargers with you
- Bathroom and bedding basics ready
- Household-specific essentials included
- One clearly marked bag kept accessible
Imagine arriving when you are tired
Think through a simple evening: getting inside, washing your hands, charging your phone, eating something and going to bed. Pack what makes those tasks possible. Keep keys, essential documents and personal items you cannot be without under your own control.
Build a small household kit
Include toilet paper, hand soap, a towel, chargers, bedding and a change of clothes. Add a few cups, a simple meal plan and anything your household needs immediately. Keep children’s comfort items and pet supplies easy to reach rather than buried in general boxes.
Keep it separate from the load
Use a bag or distinctive box and label it “Open first”. Tell anyone helping that it stays with you, or agree exactly where it will be placed. A perfectly packed essentials box is no help if it is the first item loaded and the last item found.
Prepare the first room
Choose one room to make usable before unpacking everything else. Clear a safe route to it and find the bathroom supplies first. If assembly or cleaning is part of your move, share that priority with the team. You do not need the whole home finished on night one.
