Donate, recycle or remove? Sort before booking a pickup.
Sorting first makes the pickup request clearer and keeps useful items from becoming an afterthought. Confirm destinations before promising a donation.

At a glance
Your quick checklist
- Keep, reuse and disposal groups separated
- Donation acceptance confirmed
- Special materials identified
- Whole pile and access photographed
Make three practical groups
Separate items you are keeping, items you want to offer for reuse and items needing disposal. Check condition before putting something in the donation group. A usable item still needs a receiving organisation willing to accept it; acceptance should not be assumed.
Confirm collection arrangements
Ask a donation organisation what it currently accepts, whether pickup is available and what preparation is required. Keep confirmed donations separate from the removal load. Do not book two collections for the same item without making the responsibilities clear.
Check unusual materials
Batteries, electronics, paint and other special materials may need a different route from ordinary household items. Use Halton’s current waste sorting guidance for local disposal options and tell the removal team exactly what you have. Do not hide unknown containers inside general bags.
Send an honest pickup brief
Photograph the full pile, list large items and explain stairs, parking and access. Mention anything that needs dismantling. Ask what the quote includes and which items cannot be accepted. The goal is an agreed collection, not a surprise extra pile when the vehicle arrives.
